It is illegal in the state of California to have tires that are wider than the body of the car without mudflaps to cover the additional with of the tires. There are several similar laws in other states. I

All vehicles must be equipped with

the proper fenders, covers, flaps or splash aprons

to cover the entire width of all tires and effectively

minimize the spray or splash of the water or mud.

In Poland you can't have wheels wider than your fenders full stop. No exceptions. That's why quads are sometimes a pain in the arse to register.

But it's legal for your entire car to fall apart, dropping bumpers, hubcaps, uneaten McDonald's burgers, spare tires, ladders, etc. Sometimes I hate my state :(

I believe that's the case in every state - nothing is supposed to protrude past the car's body for safety reasons. (body should push a pedestrian out of the way before the tire mangles them) Also around here we can get rejected if rust or crumpling has left any jagged/sharp edges.

Well If your car falls apart on the highway you are subject to littering charges.

I do agree that some cars that drive around are in a sorry state, the biggest offenders that I avoid like the plague are people who roll around with bald tires, GET IT FIXED PEOPLE.

Oh hey there is a law against bald tires, quite a few actually, WHY ISN'T THIS ENFORCED?

605. "Tire traction devices" are devices or mechanisms having a composition and design capable of improving vehicle traction, braking, and cornering ability upon snow or ice-covered surfaces. Tire traction devices shall be constructed and assembled to provide sufficient structural integrity and to prevent accidental detachment from vehicles. Tire traction devices shall, at the time of manufacture or final assembly, bear a permanent impression indicating the name, initials, or trademark of the assembling company or primary manufacturer, and the country in which the devices were manufactured or assembled in final form.

27450. When any vehicle is equipped with any solid tire, the solid tire shall have a minimum thickness of resilient rubber as follows: (a) If the width of the tire is three inches but less than six inches, one inch thick. (b) If the width of the tire is six inches but not more than nine inches, 11/4 inches thick. (c) If the width of the tire is more than nine inches, 11/2 inches thick.

27451. The rubber of a solid tire shall be measured between the surface of the roadway and the nearest metal part of the base flange to which the tire is attached at the point where the concentrated weight of the vehicle bears upon the surface of the roadway.

27452. The required thickness of rubber shall extend evenly around the entire periphery of the tire. The entire solid tire shall be securely attached to the channel base and shall be without flat spots or bumpy rubber.

27453. There shall not be an average difference greater than 1/8 inch between the outside diameters of each single tire composing a dual solid rubber tire.

27454. No tire on any vehicle upon any highway shall have on its periphery any block, stud, flange, cleat, ridge, bead, or any other protuberance of metal or wood which projects beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire.

Bald tires, cracked tires, and space-saving spares. See them way too often.

At least most of the time you can spot the really bad drivers by the amount of un-repaired accident damage on their car.

I live in a city with several lifted trucks (oil money baby) with tires far too wide and it seems like law enforcement doesn't even care.

Because it would cost California too much money to equip every CHP officer with a penny to check tread depth.

Hahahahaha

It's also illegal to have handlebars on your motorcycle that are more than 18" above the seat at it's lowest point. Sure see a lot of apehangers in CA, though. Hmm...

Here's the thing about CA, or at least the southern 200 miles. For some reason, possibly money, many traffic laws are not enforced. I've watched more turns and lane changes without signals, speeding, driving unsafe vehicles, and many other violations of the law here than anywhere else I've lived or visited. And more often than not it is not enforced even when there are officers right there watching it going down. Now I have seen some traffic stops on the side of the highway but not as many as Chicago or Providence or even Gilette WY.

To my shame, I kind of like those. Well, 'like' is the wrong word. But if you're going to have ridiculous wheels, those are properly ridiculous. They don't make any pretence of enhancing performance or anything like that; they're just plain silly, and that's alright by me.

I have the same problem on MA with the tires on my jeep, that's why I have the bushwhacker flat fender flares and when I inevitably do a full width Dana 60 swap I'll be making wide ass removable metal flares in the hope it remains street legal. And then I can take them off at the trail....

MA also has a stupid regulation on lift height which requires a formula to calculate dependent on wheel base, the max height for a cherokee is supposed to be 2.5" over stock, but that is bullshit.
